French universities: flag at half-mast

Times Higher Education (THE) is certainly not the bible, but its ranking is one of those that matters and is a reference in the university world.

Its 2016 report, which has just been published, unsurprisingly reconfirms the superior quality of English universities, highlighting once again, if needed, the mediocrity of those in France.

13 of them rank in the top 200, but more importantly, only four (Ecole Normale 17th, Polytechnique 43rd, Pierre and Curie Paris 51st, Paris-Sud 96th) appear in the top 100!

In comparison, Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College of London share the podium in order and lead the pack of 43 others!

As for the University of Nice, there’s no need to look for it; you won’t find it as it doesn’t appear, unlike its neighbor Aix-Marseille, which occupies the 131st place. Far from being great but still better than nothing.

It may be in these kinds of results, this one or others that confirm the situation, that we should look for the answer to the difficulties many young people face in finding their professional place in modern society.

Reflection is essential, certainly more useful than protest marches: it’s true that it might be less fun and highlight the responsibilities of everyone involved…
