A victory was imperative for ASPTT Nice Handball against Angoulême this Saturday, February 12, 2011, to continue clinging to the top tier of the second division ranking. And that’s exactly what we witnessed at the Eucalyptus gymnasium in Nice.

The bulk of the work was done in the first half. The Niçoises were strong defensively, allowing very few opportunities for the Angoumoisines. By counter-attacking quickly, the Azuriennes were able to widen the gap on the scoreboard, leading at halftime 21 to 14.

After that, the second half was all about managing their lead for Franck Bulleux’s players. Although there was a slight relaxation due to some passing errors in the first ten minutes of the second half, Nodjialem Myaro’s teammates still maintained a certain level of play to keep this gap and eventually win 39 to 32. Noteworthy was the very good performance of the second goalkeeper, Sonia Bonche. Freshly arrived from Toulon this season, Sonia only played about twenty minutes in this match but was able to showcase all her talent (with over 50% saves), even treating us to some splits worthy of a kung-fu movie.

In terms of points, despite this home victory, ASPTT Nice Handball remains in seventh place in the standings. But the Niçoises are now only five points away from second place (currently held by Bègles). Moreover, they have two games in hand compared to their direct competitors. Next Saturday, they will once again play at home. They will host the players from Vaulx-en-Velin at the Eucalyptus gymnasium.
