Once again this year, many champions will line up at the start of the 4th edition of the Ironman France. All will have one thing in mind, to outpace their adversaries to become the Ironman of France 2008 and, at the same time, open the doors to Hawaii. Nevertheless, there are plenty of favorites for the title, and a full commitment to victory will be necessary.
On the men’s side, Marcel Zamora Perez (ESP) is the one to watch once again. The double winner of Ironman France in 2006 and 2007, and double winner of Ironman Monaco 70.3 in 2006 and 2007 is back to compete for a new French title. However, there is no shortage of contenders for the supreme title. Current world champion Julien Loy (FRA) has withdrawn after a fall three weeks ago, but his runner-up Xavier Le Floch (FRA) will be in the race. He will also be joined by his fellow countryman and former Ironman France 2005 winner Hervรฉ Faure (FRA). Other champions like the Belgian Rutger Beke, who won Ironman Monaco in 2005, and the Hungarian Jozsef Major, who won in Arizona, will be there to compete, further adding to the uncertainty of the result!
For the women, an amazing race for victory also awaits us. Alexandra Louison (FRA) is returning to defend her 2007 title and try to confirm last year’s performance. However, despite being a native of Nice and knowing the course like the back of her hand, she will need to be very wary of Katja Schumacher (GER), who has already won 4 Ironmans. Alongside these two exceptional champions, watch out for the advances of American Katya Meyers, who could upset the two main favorites.
A major surprise is joining this distinguished selection of athletes this year: the participation of the charismatic French cyclist Laurent Jalabert. A big favorite in the cycling event, he could certainly surprise many with his ranking as a Finisher of the Ironman France 2008.
The dice are cast. Around 3:15 PM for the men and 4:00 PM for the women, next Sunday, June 22, the history of Ironman France will have two new heroes. Let the bets begin!
