The department is preparing for a day marked by intense rainfall. State services are stepping up their mobilization. The population is urged to exercise caution.

The Alpes-Maritimes are preparing for a rainy episode forecast for Sunday, November 16. Météo-France has placed the department on orange alert for “rain-flooding”. The decision was announced Saturday at 10 p.m. The alert will be active from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Authorities have been monitoring the situation since the day before and are calling on residents to stay alert to official information.

The bulletin announces the arrival of rainy and stormy areas from late night onwards. These systems should cross the department throughout the day. They could prove intense, particularly in the southeastern half of the territory. Forecasters mention significant rainfall amounts. Expected precipitation is between 80 and 120 mm over the entire episode. Values close to 150 mm remain possible in certain areas. Predicted intensities could reach 20 to 40 mm per hour. According to Météo-France, “the episode will ease off in the evening.”

In response to these conditions, the State has placed the departmental operations center on pre-alert. This system allows for coordination of the actions of relevant services. It facilitates information circulation and rapid decision-making if conditions deteriorate. Teams remain mobilized for any intervention deemed necessary. The prefecture is monitoring water levels, sensitive waterways and traffic routes where overflows may occur.

The department’s configuration requires particular vigilance. Dense urban areas, narrow valleys and routes subject to runoff represent fragile points. The forecast phenomena can cause rapid water rises.

Be vigilant

The prefecture is issuing several simple recommendations to follow. These guidelines aim to reduce risks for residents and rescue teams alike. Official instructions remain clear: “inform yourself before undertaking any travel or other outdoor activity.” Non-essential journeys are discouraged. Roads can become impassable within minutes. Authorities emphasize the danger posed by submerged roadways.

The statement reminds of an essential rule: “never venture, on foot or in a vehicle, on a flooded road or near a waterway. Even a 4×4 vehicle can be swept away in 30 centimeters of water.” This type of situation causes serious accidents every year. Rescue services emphasize that the risk is often underestimated. A shallow depth of water is sufficient to destabilize a vehicle or pedestrian.

Residents are encouraged to protect their belongings. The last piece of advice given reminds them: “preventively put your belongings out of reach of water.” This measure applies particularly to objects stored on the ground floor or outdoors.

The prefecture will publish updates depending on how the situation evolves. Information will be available through the usual channels.
