“Seasonal jobs are reserved only for the children of employees.”

Latest News

Every year, the “chassés croisés” of employment make more than one student nervous. Some wonder who will be the next president, others scour the classified ads. It’s impossible to just laze about in the sun. The young are working.

On April 18th at Esplanade du Levant in Saint Laurent du Var, companies and young people met to talk about work. A.G.A.S.C.*, National Police, Army, temp agencies, hypermarkets, banks… About ten recruiters gathered all day to offer positions to those who requested them. From 10 am to 5 pm, the Ferrière hall did not falter and motivated future employees met with available recruiters. Available? Yes, but… The jobs are not accessible to everyone: “Seasonal jobs are reserved only for the employees’ children.” Therefore, it is impossible to set foot in this financial establishment.

This statement often resonates in the ears of job seekers, and the issue of “connections” then arises. It’s understandable. Companies overwhelmed with applications must make a choice, even if it is arbitrary. How can one join a company without connections? How can one pay for their studies when the minimum wage dominates indiscriminately of hours (nights) or days (weekends and holidays)? Employment, a sensitive topic in political debates, interests the French whether they are students or employees. Fortunately, many jobs are available in a highly touristic department.

“One in four seasonal workers works in the restaurant industry.”

A study report by INSEE in September 2006 outlined a portrait of seasonal jobs in a department where the tourism sector hires strongly. Therefore, a seasonal worker in the Alpes-Maritimes is predominantly, according to INSEE, a man under 26 years old, employed in the catering industry or in jobs such as sales (ice creams, beauty products, shoes, etc.) or the manufacturing of objects (ceramics, weaving). This man, finally, is paid on average 7.90 euros per hour (2 euros less on average than his colleagues who are present all year). At least, that was the observation of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (based on 2003 figures), but it is clear that four years later, changes are still… current.
