Tennis: hard-fought victory for Diane Parry at the US Open

Latest News

This Monday, the Nice native Diane Parry defeated the Chinese Xiyu Wang in the first round of the US Open. She advances to the second round of the tournament for the first time.

At 21, Diane Parry is competing in her 4th US Open. However, Flushing Meadows has never been favorable to her. Indeed, she has never managed to get past the first round of the tournament. Ranked 62nd in the world, the young French player struggles to find her footing in New York. In addition, her preparation on hard courts has been scarcely convincing, with only one match in Cleveland last week, ending in a defeat in the first round.

Therefore, Diane Parry approached her match against a well-known opponent, the Chinese Xiyu Wang, with little certainty. The latter, currently ranked 56th in the world, had already defeated Parry in the first round of the US Open two years ago and hoped to repeat that feat in 2024.

Nevertheless, it was the Frenchwoman who emerged victorious in this third encounter between the two players. The Nice native started her match with great energy, quickly leading 3-0. After a lapse, Wang caught up to 3-3. However, Diane didn’t give up, and thanks to her one-handed backhand, she held her ground against the Chinese player. This first set ended in a tiebreaker, which Diane managed better, winning it 7-2. The second set started more difficultly for Parry. Trailing 3-1, she came back and with a steely mentality, she also won the second set in a tiebreaker (7-5).

In the second round, scheduled for tomorrow, Diane Parry will face another Wang, Wang Yafan, ranked 80th in the world.

Some statistics:

  • % of 1st serve: Parry = 61% / Wang = 59%
  • Winners: Parry = 22 / Wang = 34
  • Unforced errors: Parry = 17 / Wang = 42
  • Aces: Parry = 6 / Wang = 9
  • Double faults: Parry = 3 / Wang = 7
