Monique THIBAUDIN
“Retrospective and Unreleased Works”

You are invited to the opening which will take place on Thursday, June 10th at 7 PM at the Museaav, where Monique THIBAUDIN’s anti-busts, created by this visual artist, will be showcased.

Once upon a time, there was a Woman and her Anti-busts…

Monique Thibaudin, a visual artist, graduated from the National School of Art and Architecture in Marseille-Luminy. Her professor, Claude Viallat, is a founding member of the Support-Surface group. In the 1970s, artists embarked on a reflection on the material reality of painting aimed at giving a definition of the pictorial language itself. The “deconstruction” of the painting into its constituent elements led to new artistic practices.

Drawing from these influences, Monique Thibaudin created her Anti-busts: They are at the heart of a hybrid and polymorphic work, neither sculptures, nor mannequins, nor dolls, manipulable and transformable at will. Less transgressive than Hans Bellmer’s The Doll (1935), these bodily ambivalences call upon all fantasies.

The Anti-bust is a woman without a bust or head. Just a pelvis and legs.

Magritte said: “I saw this afternoon, in full sunlight, a young woman waiting for the tram in the company of her body.” A bit as if the body accompanied the woman… For Magritte, it is about the desire of the body. Monique Thibaudin separates the top from the bottom, which has become a formal entity, the body of desire. Thus fragmented, she separates the spirit from the sexualized.

In the summer of 2008, she created the sets for a film in Cogoleto, Italy, filmed in an abandoned psychiatric hospital where 2,000 mental patients lived. The theme of the gaze upon disability still inspires her today, and she is exhibiting at MUSEAAV unreleased works born from her obsession: to be wary of external reality, to reach the very essence of each one, to see the invisible, LISTEN TO THE SILENCE.
