The year 2006 marks the 5th anniversary of March at the Museums, an event co-organized by the City of Nice, the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, and the students of the Master’s program in “Mediation and Cultural Engineering”. Its originality lies in a unique principle in France: free admission to the museums in Nice for students and young people under 26 years old. Throughout the month of March, 37 events are scheduled across 20 cultural venues participating in the operation, bringing together 230 participants (curators, mediators, artists, associations, lecturers, students, etc.).
Beyond its free admission, and as a highlight of this new edition, March at the Museums 2006 broadens its horizons. The event keeps the same name but refreshes its image and becomes multidisciplinary. It now includes new cultural institutions such as the Louis Nucรฉra Regional Municipal Library, the Heritage Center, the Cinรฉmathรจque de Nice, and the Maeght Foundation. This expansion reflects the organizers’ desire to situate themselves at the crossroads of the arts and to develop new artistic disciplines and forms of cultural mediation. This March is also an opportunity to promote Nice’s art and cultural heritage by showcasing initiatives and creations from regional artists.
Cultural institutions thus “offer themselves” to the young public through intersections and encounters by presenting various artistic languages (dance, music, graffiti, singing, poetry, visual arts, theater, audiovisual) and proposing different pedagogical approaches (mediations, workshops, conferences, off-site courses) around their exhibitions and programming.
Nine major events (day and evening) punctuate the month, from the Opening at the Theatre of Photography and Image to the Closing at the University Center of Saint-Jean d’Angely, including events at MAMAC, the Palais Lascaris, the Museum of Fine Arts, the International Museum of Naive Art, the Museum of Archaeology, and municipal galleries.
