Why do Italians vote for Berlusconi?

The virulence of propaganda, the powerlessness of citizens, a precarious economic system, illegal power games… or even a natural disaster.

These are some of the factors, which combined, can explain how the young Italian democracy has been subjugated. Sabina Guzzanti, an actress, director, and very popular satirical author in Italy, investigates by digging through the rubble of the L’Aquila earthquake of April 6, 2009.

After Viva Zapatero!, the one who is often compared to Michael Moore makes a strong impact once again. Let us recall that the Minister of Culture of the Italian government refused to attend the screening of the film presented at the Cannes Film Festival where it was shown out of competition.

Draquila is the story of the propagandist management by Silvio Berlusconi and the Department of Civil Protection after the earthquake that destroyed the city of L’Aquila.

Between documentary and caricature, Sabina Guzzanti’s film depicts a Prime Minister taking advantage of a natural disaster to use it as a propaganda exercise. The director makes a very harsh assessment of the current situation: “Dictatorship is not the word. Democracy is not either.”
