Péone: Discovery of a Centuries-Old Art, Illumination

Latest News

Until Friday, August 12 at the Chapel of the White Penitents – Péone

The Valberg media library is organizing a free illumination workshop.

Illuminations are illustrated medieval manuscripts, covered with gold leaf, painted, and often adorned with a stylized floral or/and animal decor.

This exceptional five-day workshop, with Michèle Babilotte-Soler, master illuminator and artist-painter, will offer you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with this rare art by creating a monogram of your choice on “parchment” paper.

Monograms are first names or family names, with the embossed initial covered in gold leaf.

The layers of Armenian bole or gilding clay are superimposed as much as possible, then the roughness of this red paste is smoothed with an agate shaped like a wolf’s tooth. The gilding mordant is an adhesive that allows the thin gold leaf to adhere to the Armenian bole. The other letters, painted in gouache, intertwine to form a single motif.

The entire piece is enhanced with fine graphics (scrolls, flowers, leaves, beads, etc.), drawn with a quill and Indian ink, sometimes also adorned with gold.

Creating a monogram is long and painstaking work that requires precision and patience.
