The recent events, beyond their dynamics, call for a deeper reflection on a situation that will only recur and which risks fueling a conflict between the rights of some and others that has no place if we want a civil and humane society where everyone can find their model of life in respect of others.
Otherwise, should we ask ourselves some questions:
Where are we going to end up? Or rather, where do we want to end up? Can we stop this folly that is evidently veering off course?
The fascination for perseverance leads to fascination for dereliction, the social name for which is moral decadence.
Ideological confrontations should not be done on the backs of honest citizens and poor people.
Are there no other means to find a fair and equitable solution without triggering these small wars and the constant exhibition of power?
To better understand, it is enough to read the examples below.
How do we get out of this stalemate?
Christian Estrosi โ Member of Parliament and Mayor of Nice:
“For several months, I have been striving to dismantle and obtain the evacuation of Roma camps which create numerous nuisances in our city. I have obtained the dismantling of the squats on Offenbach Street, in Madeleine, and this week on Beaumont Street.
Since yesterday, several dozen municipal and national police officers have been mobilized to prevent the formation of a squat at 590 Grenoble Road in Nice. The police forces are unfortunately confronted with the scandalous, irresponsible, and anti-republican behavior of several associations, including that of the right to housing and a left-wing representative, who are causing agitation. It is unacceptable that elected officials and associations who claim to protect human dignity obstruct the work of the police and marginalize themselves by encouraging illegal aliens and Roma to commit offenses.
I want everyone to know that those who do not respect the laws of the Republic, Roma, squatters, and illegal aliens are not welcome in the territory of the city of Nice, and I will take every measure to maintain pressure.
I want to thank the Prefect who assists in this operation, but I will continue to denounce the government’s lax policy that leads these militant and irresponsible associations to distribute to illegal individuals maps with a list of properties to squat. I have just solemnly requested the Minister of the Interior for additional personnel to deal with the proliferation of these actions, especially those of the Roma, which the city of Nice suffers from because of the government’s encouraging and lax policy.”
For Emmanuelle GAZIELLO (municipal and metropolitan councilor of the PCF/Front de Gauche), the Right to Housing 06, R.E.F.F.06, and Z.A.D.06 (protection of fertile lands)
A piece of land located at the place called “the Var” south of Lingostiรจre on the Plaine du Var* is the subject of a citizen requisition according to the rules for several days.
This citizen requisition has been carried out by Right To Housing 06 and the association Sรจme Ta Zad 06 with a desire to defend fertile lands and to denounce the empty housing deliberately left untouched by the authorities.
We have chosen to associate the Roma as they informed us, through the Prales association, of their desire to return to market gardening, an activity they practiced in Romania.
This would allow them to get out of begging and integrate into society: the Roma we are talking about all have their papers, and their children are in school.
Everything was going well these past few days; a police officer performing a patrol even confirmed that the domiciling was effective and that there had been no breaking in.
However, this evening around 6 pm, the police forces (municipal officers, national police, and plain-clothed police according to the families present) entered the land illegally and conducted an aggressive raid on the thirty Roma occupying the place in a completely legal manner..
They transported the group to Gilette (a village in the hinterland of Nice about twenty kilometers from the site), where they were dropped off near another Roma camp.
Viorel Costache (representative of the Roma in Alpes-Maritimes) alerted the Sub-Prefect who had to call the Gendarmerie to escort the Roma back to Nice where they were accommodated.
We officially request to have the owner’s complaint and the mission order in our hands within 48 hours. After this time, a complaint will be filed, and we will take civil action.
