The PCF federation of Alpes-Maritimes will commemorate the memory of Max Barel and all the victims of Nazi barbarism this Thursday, July 11 at 6 PM at Place Max Barel.
A communist, polytechnician, and artillery lieutenant in 1940, he preferred to resign from the army rather than swear allegiance to Pétain.
As a member of the French Resistance, he was arrested by the Gestapo on July 6, 1944, on the platforms of the Lyon-Perrache station.
Imprisoned and tortured for 4 days and 5 nights by executioners under the orders of Klaus Barbie, Max did not speak. He kept silent about the names of his fellow fighters until his death.
Like his father Virgile, a deputy of the Popular Front in Alpes-Maritimes, Max’s commitment is total, borne by his communist ideal, like tens of thousands of others.
