In line with the policy of integrating people with disabilities, the city of Nice is doing everything possible to make daily life easier for people with disabilities and to ensure that a person with a disability can be just like anyone else who moves, works, and enjoys leisure activities.
Thus, the city of Nice sets up two handicap-accessible beaches (handiplages) for free during the summer, allowing people with disabilities to enjoy the pleasures of the sea and swim safely.
At the Carras and Centenaire handiplages (also non-smoking beaches), individuals with disabilities, regardless of age, can access the sea safely, seven days a week (including public holidays), from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM (with the last entry into the water at 5:45 PM) with:
– Proper signage;
– A nearby first aid station with access for people with disabilities;
– Specially designed reception, with reserved parking spaces near the beach facilities, showers, restrooms, and beach umbrellas;
– A pathway or ramp on the beach to allow access to the sea;
– Three tiralos (wheelchairs enabling disabled people to bathe) and a hippocampe chair;
– Eight handiplagists, seasonal staff employed by the city to assist and help people with disabilities when swimming (transferring from chair to tiralo, entering the water, showering, etc.);
– An audiobeach at the Carras site, with a system of sound markers, allowing visually impaired or blind individuals to enjoy swimming independently;
– The possibility to reach the sites using the MobilโAzur transport service. Registrations and reservations at the toll-free number 0 805 20 06 06. 1โฌ per trip.
Building on the success of 2011 (1,593 water entries) and to offer this service to as many people as possible, both locals and tourists, the city of Nice has extended the opening of its two handiplages this year: until September 30 for Centenaire Beach and until September 9 for Carras Beach.
Extended hours on both sites from July 14 to August 19: from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM (last entry into the water at 6:15 PM).
