It was the highlight match of the championship day, a match that Nice had to win for three reasons: to erase last week’s defeat against the leader Cantalou, to beat a direct competitor for promotion (even though they were handicapped by the DNCG’s decision to deduct 4 points from their standings), and to maintain their unbeaten streak in their favorite venue.
The evening was one of great occasions, and the stands were well-filled with a cheerful and good-natured crowd. It took two hours of play, five sets, and a thrilling finale to finally clinch the victory.
The first two sets were mirror images of each other: played point by point with (too) many service faults. 22-22 in each set. The first set eventually went to Avignon (23-25) and the second to Nice (25-22). In the third set, the protรฉgรฉs of President Griguier had the upper hand, winning 25-19, also giving the impression of having the match under control. This was counting without the determination of the Vauclusiens, who did not want to admit defeat and, with a strong response, tied in sets (21-25).
Conclusion in the tie-set and emotions running high. Avignon had the advantage up to 10-12, then Nice threw all their energy into the battle to come back and win the match amidst applause from a fully supportive crowd.
In the end, a very successful operation for Nice Volley, who took advantage of Cantalou’s defeat to join them at the top of the standings.
