The “No to the Tram Tunnel” Collective is taking advantage of the departmental elections to bring this project back to the forefront, which, according to them, does not have unanimous support.
After being dismissed in court in the administrative appeal they filed, these activists will be directly present in the elections with three pairs of candidates in the Nice districts affected by the tunnel’s route (Nice 1, 6, 9).
Of course, these will be candidacy gestures with no hope of being elected, or even making it to the second round.
Moreover, this issue does not fall under the Departmental Council’s jurisdiction, and the protesters are well aware of this. But, as the saying goes in such situations: any means is good as long as it gets people talking.
The question remains: which candidates will subscribe to this charter?
Charter of the Committee Against the Tram Tunnel for the candidates in the departmental elections in the sectors crossed by the proposed tunnel route (Nice 1, 6, and 9)
A staggering cost!
The average cost for a tramway is 22 million €/km.
In Nice, the route voted by the majority will cost 56.5 million €/km
Total cost: 2009: 767 million € including VAT
2015: likely over 1 billion € including VAT!!!
These are our taxes!
While the city council and the metropolitan area are already over 1 billion € in debt, this project will become a financial abyss that we will have to pay for through our local taxes.
Alternatives! Sensible alternative projects were under consideration.
On a whim and without consulting the population, the mayor decided to bury part of the route in the aquifer.
The 3.2 km tunnel represents an additional cost of 432 million €!
A dangerous project!
The geological context is dangerous. Our ground is waterlogged with currently sealed gypsum pockets. The tunnel excavation will upset this balance and endanger the surrounding buildings. Furthermore, we are located in one of the most seismic-active zones in France…
