League of Human Rights: the tragedy of the undocumented as seen by the protagonists

Latest News

On April 17th, the Human Rights League is organizing a day centered around a book and a film based on a sociological study of the undocumented migrants who mobilized in the Île-de-France region in 2009.

Admission is free for the conference about the book, which will take place at the Faculty of Law in Nice from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a screening at the Mercury Cinema at 5:30 PM. The director and one of the authors of the book will be present.

In 2009, over 6,000 undocumented workers went on strike to demand regularization.

Among them, 1,400 temporary workers were the actors in the first massive and coordinated strike in this sector of activity. It was a historic moment for the struggle of undocumented migrants as well as for the labor movement.

“We Came for the Visit” shows the internal organization of the strike, the daily debates, the way decisions are made, and the hesitations encountered as well as the certainties gained. Over the months, strikers and unionists invent new modes of demands.

Meetings, negotiations with employers, discussions with the police: this film closely follows the undocumented migrants learning the ins and outs of striking by participating in it.

In the tradition of direct cinema, this film aims to both preserve a record of this unprecedented movement and facilitate the transmission of tools for the struggle.
