This Monday, Christian Estrosi presented, at the Nice Urban Supervision Center, a groundbreaking initiative in France: linking the cameras inside the tramway to the Urban Supervision Center for real-time viewing. Thus, the city of Nice becomes the first to implement such a high-tech system for increased security.
โExpanding the scope of video surveillanceโ is the objective set by the Mayor of Nice on January 19, in response to the attacks in France. By organizing this special City Council, Christian Estrosi proposed a number of preventive and security measures. One of these measures is now being applied: linking the cameras inside the tramways to the Urban Supervision Center.
With a police video demonstration showing a wallet theft in the tram, the police demonstrate how the individual is located and apprehended. The connection of the cameras to the Center allows the theft to be recorded in real time thanks to the tram’s surveillance videos and to track the thief with the 1,031 cameras positioned around the city’s streets. This allows for the immediate arrest of the individual, as well as recorded evidence of the theft and the handling of the victim.
A better fight against fraud and delinquency
With 68 officers responsible for checking passengers’ transport tickets across the entire network, the cameras on board the trams facilitate the fight against fraud. This year it has intensified, with fines collected rising from 811,285 to 1,147,258 euros.
The Mayor also wanted to highlight progress in the fight against delinquency. Before connecting the cameras, there were on average 55 assaults on staff and 39 on passengers per year. Today, the average is 35 assaults on staff and 24 on passengers, a figure that is constantly declining.
60 cameras in the city of Nice are positioned along the tramway route and 46 are placed around the platforms. Today, 170 cameras have been added, equivalent to 7 cameras inside a 44-meter tram car and 5 for a 33-meter tram car. Ultimately, 591 cameras will be installed to enhance the security of tram line 1.
