One of the elements of the uberization of the economy impacting our way of life has found a solution: since yesterday, after Paris and Chamonix, Airbnb has expanded the collection of the tourist tax to 18 other French cities. Among them are Cannes, Nice, and Antibes.
For hoteliers, who are up in arms against the American online rental site Airbnb, accusing it of unfair competition, this is excellent news.
Until now, the “landlord” was required to collect the tourist tax and then transfer it to each municipality. Needless to say, this practice often led to… forgetfulness!
Now, everything is automatic; the site, based in San Francisco, automatically deducts this tax and transfers it to the cities.
Set by the Municipal Council, the tourist tax is owed by every vacationer who spends a night in accommodations (palace, tourist hotel, tourist residence, furnished tourist accommodation, bed and breakfasts, holiday village, outdoor accommodations, youth hostel).
It helps finance expenses related to tourist visits or the protection of their natural tourist spaces for tourism purposes.
