Cinéalma, the annual film festival in Carros, will kick off its 9th edition on October 10.
For more than a week, no fewer than 33 films will be screened, including 14 premieres and 7 exclusives, from 13 countries: France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Israel, Palestine, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Turkey, Croatia, Argentina, Mali.
Staying true to its mission, the 9th edition of Cinéalma presents a selection of films from different countries around the Mediterranean basin, with this year putting a spotlight on Spain.
Audiences will thus be able to appreciate films from renowned directors such as David Trueba (Vivir es facil con los ojos cerrados – 5 Goyas), Jaime Rosales (La belle jeunesse – Un Certain Regard Cannes), Paco Leon (Carmina o Revienta) Fernando Franco (La Blessure – Goya for Best Actress and Best First Film)…
Italian cinema will also be honored with, among others, the film that won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, The Wonders by Alice Rohrwacher. A special tribute will be paid to the actress who opened Cinéalma last year, Valeria Golino, with the screening of two of her latest films: Come il Vento by Marco Simon Puccioni, who will be present in Carros, and Human Capital by Paolo Virzi, which won 7 Donatellos.
Great Moroccan, Tunisian, and Algerian directors will present their latest films, which have been very successful at numerous festivals this year, such as Merzak Ellouache (The Rooftops), to name just one. Israeli cinema will be well represented this year with powerful films like Epilogue by Amir Manor. Palestine will not be forgotten with the moving Palestine Stereo by Rashid Masharawi.
Particular interest has been given to the programming of major award-winning films at Cannes. This is the case with Winter Sleep by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, which won the Palme d’Or, and Hope, winner of the Critics’ Week Award, screened during the festival’s closing night in the presence of its director Boris Lojkine.
Finally, the program is expanded this year with prestigious films from Greece, Croatia, and Argentina. Another source of pride for this edition is the world premiere of The Grapes of Hope, a film by director Bay Okan, who resides in Carros.
Each year, part of the festival’s proceeds is donated to a charity. This year Cinéalma will support the Théodora Foundation, which aims to relieve the daily lives of hospitalized or specially-institutionalized children through laughter, by providing them with visits from professional clowns.
