Between May and September, attendance in hotels, campgrounds, and other collective accommodations fell by 6% in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur compared to 2015, a decline mainly due to the consequences of the attack committed on July 14 in Nice, according to an INSEE study.
After Île-de-France (-12.4%), Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur is the region where the summer tourist season was the least favorable. Nationwide, the number of overnight stays dropped by 2.5% compared to the summer of 2015. The number of stays amounted to 36.6 million overnight stays.
The Alpes-Maritimes (-9.5% in overnight stays) is the department most affected by this decline, which was already noticeable at the start of the season and worsened by the attack in Nice on July 14.
Compared to 2015, hotel attendance in Nice, which decreased by 1.7% from July 1 to July 14, plummeted by 15.5% from July 15 to July 31. High-end establishments were particularly affected.
Despite hosting several Euro 2016 matches in June, attendance in hotels in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur during the 2016 summer season amounted to 12.7 million overnight stays, with the total number of stays declining by 4.9% due to a decrease in foreign clientele attendance (-9%).
Regarding campgrounds, which represent 40% of the region’s overnight stays with 14.7 million stays from May to September, their attendance decreased by 3% in 2016.
