Nice: The UNI 06 Association Once Again Takes Action Against Student Precarity

Latest News

This Monday, the associations Uni 06 and APLA mobilized and organized a large free food distribution at the Carlone university hub, aimed at all students, particularly those affected by precariousness. An act of solidarity that brings them comfort.

For UNI 06, the situation is critical. The student precariousness rate has already reached a fairly high level. And with the consequences of the Covid-19 health crisis, more and more students find themselves in complicated situations, both financially and psychologically. This is why, with the help of the APLA association (Association For Others), members decided to organize, for the third time this year, a large free distribution of food and hygiene products for students at the Baie des Anges residence (Nice). This helps them save money and feel supported despite the challenges caused.

A third distribution in a month

This is the third large distribution organized by the members of UNI 06, supported by the Alpes-Maritimes Departmental Council. After Jean Mรฉdecin and the Collinettes, they are now at the Carlone hub. Here, nearly 150 packages are distributed to campus students without asking for proof, whether they are affected by precariousness or not. In the bags, there is rice, pasta, savory and sweet products, toothbrushes, shampoo. A solidarity action that sends a message to young people struggling with their budget, employment, or even psychologically. According to Andrรฉa Orabona, manager of UNI 06, “one in four students has suicidal desires” and “56% have to ration themselves or cut their budget”.

A collective action with the same sole objective

In addition to all the products offered, this solidarity project also provides a significant financial advantage to students. An advantage that can reach up to 60 euros per month after three distributions. “A young grant recipient at level 0 or 1 has a very tight budget, they cannot afford any extras. Our distributions will therefore help them breathe financially and allow for little indulgences.” explains Hugo Roussin, press manager of UNI 06.

Cyprien Aumaitre, a second-year Master’s student, says he is happy to be supported and helped by this solidarity project. “I put myself in the place of those who are unfortunate enough to be in this kind of situation. Just the idea of being helped can lift the spirits of students who feel isolated due to job losses, money problems, etc.” After all, who wouldn’t be psychologically affected by having to stay in their 9mยฒ during confinement? “Normally, when you’re a student, you go out for some air, enjoy the sun, go to restaurants and bars. During a crisis like now, we live a different life.”

In the span of twenty minutes, three-quarters of the packages are gone. For UNI 06, this third large distribution alongside the APLA team is a new success in the fight against student precariousness. The members do not intend to stop there and plan to carry out new operations to help students.
