The Vendée Globe fleet is preparing to face difficult hours. With strong winds, the night has been turbulent, and the windy episode is expected to calm down in the coming hours.
The first strategies are being put in place. The passage of an active front during the night brought a harvest of gusts and choppy seas. Alexia Barrier, our sailor from the Maralpine region who is currently at the back of the standings, has chosen to head west into this storm. The objective is to gain speed and climb up in the general rankings. Winds reaching up to 35 knots (approximately 65 km/h) in places have hit the race head-on, creating waves of 4 to 5 meters.
Last night, Alexia already shared that instead of taking advantage of a calm moment during the night to rest, “I decided to make three billion tacks.” But after some rest in the afternoon, the skipper is now ready to face her first challenging weather conditions on board her monohull.
At the front of the race, the back-and-forth continues, and as of 10 PM last night, it is Maxime Sorel who was leading the fleet with a 147 nautical mile lead over Alexia. And as the sailor says so well: “everyone has their own path!”
