Fnac: digital meeting with Leïla Slimani and Abd Al Malik

Latest News

This week, Fnac is hosting a digital meeting with Leïla Slimani and Abd Al Malik on Wednesday, March 24th (7 PM).

The Fnac digital meeting “committed artists” will bring together two personalities with a passion for stirring the pot with their writing. This event will take place on Wednesday, March 24th at 7 PM… live on www.LaClaqueFnac.com

In front of the camera: Leïla Slimani and Abd Al Malik. For an hour and in a livestream format, they will engage in an open discussion on the idea of “committed artists.” Winner of the Goncourt Prize in 2016 for Chanson douce, Leïla Slimani has continuously written and spoken on social issues: women’s freedom in Morocco, #MeToo in France, radical Islam in general. With The Country of Others, the writer presents a maternal and familial saga during Morocco’s independence process.

Author, composer, rapper, and director, Abd Al Malik is truly a multifaceted artist: eight albums and as many books. Racism, integration, identities: he regularly takes a stand in public debates.

Leïla Slimani: her latest novel, “The Country of Others”

Inspired by her grandmother’s story, The Country of Others (Gallimard editions) is a narrative that is both dense and gripping. All the characters live in “The Country of Others”: the colonizers as well as the natives, the soldiers as well as the peasants or the exiles. Women live in the country of men and must constantly fight for their emancipation. All are torn between unyielding traditions and the desire for modernity.

Abd Al Malik: his latest essay, “Reconciliation”

Personal, political, provocative, and literary, Reconciliation (Robert Laffont editions) gathers seven texts that are as much interventions, micro-essays, and tributes. Each of them advocates to culturally, morally, and spiritually “revitalize” a mixed national narrative. Abd Al Malik highlights several figures dear to his mind: Albert Camus, Juliette Gréco, Édouard Glissant, Aimé Césaire, and General de Gaulle.

During an hour-long livestream, the guests will openly discuss their understanding of commitment and their vision of the role of artists. Hosted by Hubert Artus, this event is free and accessible to all.
