At the municipal council meeting on November 13, 2017, the elected officials decided to rename the former Phocéens Avenue as “Avenue Max Gallo” in homage to the writer, historian, and politician who passed away in Cabris on July 18, 2017.
This will take place on Saturday, the 2nd, at 11:30 a.m. at the entrance of Yitzhak Rabin Square opposite the “Maison de Nice” by the Mayor of Nice, in the presence of Max Gallo’s wife, Marielle.
Max Gallo, the son of a family of Italian immigrants, was born in Nice on January 7, 1932, at 42 Rue de la République. A writer and historian, he authored numerous historical novels like “La Baie des Anges” published in 1976, and historical biographies dedicated particularly to Charles de Gaulle and Napoleon. Max Gallo was also a politician. He served as the government’s spokesperson and as a member of parliament for the Alpes-Maritimes in 1981 during François Mitterrand’s first term. He held the mandate of Member of the European Parliament from 1984 to 1994. Max Gallo was elected to the Académie française in 2007, taking the seat of Jean-François Revel.
