On the occasion of the commemoration of its Liberation by the Allied forces and alongside the traditional Circuit of Memory, the City of Nice organized yesterday a commemorative program to pay tribute to civilian victims.
On August 28, 1944, the Liberation Day of Nice, 32 citizens of Nice fell under enemy fire and 280 were injured in fierce street fighting. Thanks to their courage and at the risk of their lives, these men allowed Nice to regain Honor and Freedom. The commemorative plaques bearing their names, located in the streets of Nice, have been cleaned, restored, and for some that were lost, replaced by the services of the City of Nice.
A tribute was paid to them on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, throughout the Circuit of Memory. This commemoration is part of the duty of Remembrance carried out by the City of Nice for those who sacrificed themselves for it.

The 32 resistance fighters who died for the Liberation of Nice were honored all day through this Circuit. Throughout this Circuit of Memory organized around the plaques bearing the names of these heroic men, a booklet of their biographies was distributed for free. Created by Michel Goury for the City of Nice, this booklet presents the identity of each resistance fighter (identity card with copies of period documents).

The highlight of the day was an official Ceremony at the War Memorials of Rauba Capeu – attended by Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Metropolis, Jean-Marc Giaume, Deputy Mayor of Nice in charge of Education, School Catering, Extracurricular Activities, and the Coeur de Paillon Territory, and Olivier Robaut, Municipal Councilor in charge of Veterans, subdelegate to Old Nice, Eric Ciotti, Departmental Councilor, and Dominique Estrosi Sassone, Senator of the Maritime Alps – who wished to honor our dead, while preserving the memory of these fighters, still deeply ingrained in the minds of many residents of Nice.
