Stade Niçois: a departure and an arrival

Latest News

There has been some movement this week at the Azur club.

In this 2021-22 season, Stade Niçois has once again disappointed by not meeting its well-known objective: promotion to Pro D2. To finally succeed in reaching the second division of French rugby, an entirely new project has been put in place. Following a reorganization of the staff, the management of the Azur club decided to rebuild the squad.

Several arrivals have already been announced (Mathieu Lorée, Alban Conduché, and Mathis Viard) and a new recruit was introduced this Friday, June 24. It’s an Italian international player who is coming to Nice, the full-back David Odiete.

He began his career in his native country with the Zebre (Pro12), and has played with Mogliano (Super 10), Treviso (Pro14), and Rovigo (Super 10). Two seasons ago, the Italian arrived in France by joining Stade Dijonnais. He quickly established himself as an essential element of his team and scored 17 tries alongside Alban Conduché, whom he will soon reunite with as a future player of Stade Niçois.

David Odiete expressed his thoughts on joining the Eagles:

“I believe a lot in this project and the club’s ambitions. I spoke with several players from the squad that I know, like Martin Freytes, Saki, and even Arnaud Vercruysse. I liked what they had to say. It’s a club that plays at the top of the table every year and aims to move up to Pro D2! I think it’s the right project to grow. I can play as a full-back or on the wing, in Italy I almost always played at the back, but in Dijon, I was moved to the wing. Being versatile is an advantage for a rugby player, the essential thing is that I contribute my qualities to the team. What do I think of Stade Niçois’ style of play? I played against them last year, they are a tough team with very strong forwards who push the team forward. Similarly, the backs have hard-hitting centers. I can see myself thriving in this type of team!”

This arrival numerically replaces the retirement of the English center Benjamin Mosses. Recruited in 2019 from London Scottish, he played 39 matches in the red and black jersey, scoring 3 tries.
