For the 38th time, the city of Cagnes-sur-Mer will host the largest square boule competition this Saturday, August 19, and Sunday, August 20.
A boule, but square. One might think it doesn’t roll right. Yet, that’s precisely the principle of these world championships taking place this weekend in Cagnes-sur-Mer.
No need to worry, the aim of the game is the same as traditional pรฉtanque: to be closest to the target. Only a few rules vary. Obviously, the shape of the boules and the famous jack. But also the regulation distance, which is 6 to 8 meters.
A still discreet discipline, but one gaining in popularity. As proof, last yearโs edition gathered 87 teams for the main contest and 27 for the secondary. Numerous cities are increasingly organizing competitions. For instance, the French championship takes place annually in Bagnols-en-Forรชt, in the Var. The city of Antibes celebrates every July 14 with its “Safranier Contest,” so beloved by the regulars of the old town.
Regardless of the registered players, whether they are young or old, true regulars or curious beginners eager to discover this original game, the keywords for this weekend are the same for everyone: fun, good spirits, and a friendly atmosphere!
