The major European issues of the autumn: 5. Rule of law in Poland

Latest News

Between Poland and the European Union, the situation is not only tense due to the issue of posted workers. In fact, since the ultra-conservative Law and Justice party came to power in late 2015, the gap between Warsaw, Brussels, and other European capitals has widened.

The reason: reforms undertaken by Beata Szydlo’s government that threaten the rule of law in Poland, such as those targeting the Supreme Court and the National Council of the Judiciary.

In response to these violations of European principles and rules, the European Commission has launched an infringement procedure that could lead to sanctions such as the suspension of the country’s voting rights. However, obtaining a 4/5 majority in the European Council would be necessary.

In this regard, the coming weeks could be decisive as the dialogue between the Polish government and most Europeans, especially France, is already significantly degraded.

Indeed, Emmanuel Macron stated at the end of August that the country was contravening “European values.” This statement was poorly received by Ms. Szydlo, who, in response, denounced the “arrogance” of the new president.

However, he can count on the support of Angela Merkel, who has also expressed her concern regarding the threats to the rule of law in the country.
