The Château Park, covering an area of 12 hectares, has been classified as a “Natural Monument” since December 24, 1935. This site, open to the public, which has significant tourist and heritage importance, has not been renovated for many years. Located at the eastern end of the Promenade des Anglais, the Château Hill is also an integral part of the overall Baie des Anges site and fully supports the City’s initiative toward applying for UNESCO World Heritage status.
As part of the Château Hill development project, restoration work on the Nietzsche terrace has been undertaken.
The Nietzsche terrace is undergoing a complete and identical restoration of the pebble-patterned flooring known as “calade.” The calade had numerous areas of degradation, which had been filled over time with various materials.
The interventions include the removal of kiosks of the old postcard concession, the removal and cleaning of all pebbles in order to recover, clean, sort, and reuse them to recreate the original design of this mineral carpet.
To fully enjoy the charm of the shaded panoramic terrace, the planting pits will be extensively worked on and enhanced in soil quality to plant six new holm oaks.
The red balusters present in the railings around the terrace perimeter are also included in this general refurbishment. In fact, some of them have suffered from weather damage and wear over time. They will be removed, and identical terracotta models, approved by the Architect of the Buildings of France, will be installed as replacements.
The orientation table will be preserved and cleaned.
During the restoration period, access to the Nietzsche terrace will be prohibited to the public until the end of November.
