The Alpes-Maritimes Remember: A Temporary Exhibition to Celebrate the Liberation of Nice

Latest News

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Nice and Provence, the Department of Alpes-Maritimes is organizing a temporary exhibition titled “1944-1945, The Liberated Alpes-Maritimes“.

An unprecedented commemoration for the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Nice and Provence. This exceptional event will be held on August 27, 2024, at the Lympia Departmental Cultural Space in Nice, and will be on display until the following day, August 28, 2024. A unique opportunity to delve into local history and celebrate collective memory.

The Alpes-Maritimes under German Occupation

The Alpes-Maritimes departmentโ€”occupied by German forces since September 1943โ€”experienced dark times. Particularly marked by allied aerial bombings between fall 1943 and summer 1944. These actions paved the way for the Provence landing. The latter took place on the night of August 14-15, 1944. Nice, liberated by allied troops on August 28, 1944, then experienced an era of freedom. Also marked by the triumphant entry of the Americans on August 30.

A Temporary Exhibition for a Journey into the Past

The exhibition, organized by the Departmental Archives, retraces these pivotal moments. Until August 28, the public can discover historical photographs and texts illustrating the various stages of the departmentโ€™s liberation. Special focuses will be dedicated to the liberation of Nice: to the visit of General De Gaulle in April 1945, and to the Victory celebrations. After this event, the exhibition will become itinerant, traveling to schools, town halls, and associations starting next fall.

A Lasting Memorial Commitment

For over two decades, the Departmental Council of Alpes-Maritimes has been actively engaged in memorial work. This project is thus part of a series of initiatives aimed at not forgetting the past: such as educational trips to Auschwitz or Verdun. But also to the Landing beaches, in which more than 18,000 middle school students have participated.

A Festive Event to Conclude

The evening of August 27 will conclude with a guinguette party animated by the group “Glenn Big Band Memories“. This convivial moment will allow a plunge back into the atmosphere of the 1940s, with the emblematic melodies of Glenn Miller, one of the greatest orchestra leaders of the era.

This cultural and historical event promises to be a significant moment for the inhabitants of Alpes-Maritimes and beyond, a true tribute to those who experienced these decisive events for our freedom.
