Former Nice resident, Marie Wattel claimed the silver medal in the 100m butterfly on the last day of the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen. In the 4x50m medley relay, Charlotte Bonnet brought home bronze, her third medal of the week.
“Finish on a high note.” The expression has never been more fitting than on this Sunday, the last day of competition. At the age of 20, Marie Wattel shone in the 100m butterfly. The former swimmer from Fabrice Pellerin’s group, who moved to Loughborough (England) this summer, won the silver medal behind the untouchable Swedish Sarah Sjöström. The butterfly specialist continues to climb the ranks, competition after competition. Having joined the French team at just 16 years old, Marie Wattel proves this Sunday in Denmark that she can aim high in the coming years. A first international medal that promises more to come.
Bonnet 6th in 50m
Charlotte Bonnet, coming down from her high (or not), continued her “speed work” by competing in the 50m freestyle. The Nice native posted the fourth-fastest time in the semifinals, but a little over an hour later, she finished sixth in the final (23’’94), without regret, just half a second off the podium.
Relay that shines, a good sign
When the 4×4 medley relay performs well, it’s often a good sign of the state of swimming. In the women’s group, this adage was confirmed. At the end of the session, the Cini-Bonnet-Hénique-Wattel team fought until the last strokes to secure bronze, right under the noses of the Dutch. Despite not being a pure breaststroker, Charlotte Bonnet kept France in a strong position, leaving Mélanie Hénique and Marie Wattel, undoubtedly in great form, to finish the job.
