What is the status of the petition launched by Éric Ciotti?

Latest News

On September 16, the deputy for the Alpes Maritimes, Éric Ciotti, launched a petition against the increase in property taxes. Here’s an update.

If you own real estate in Nice, you’re likely to notice a significant increase in your property tax this year. Announced in May 2024, this increase amounts to 19.2% for property owners in the capital of the French Riviera.

According to figures provided by the city, the increase will result in a monthly additional cost of 9.50 euros for a 54 m² apartment and 16 euros for a 100 m² house. This makes Nice one of the cities with a very high property tax.

Éric Ciotti’s Anger

A rise that sparked the anger of the former president of the Republicans, Éric Ciotti. After announcing yesterday, September 22, his departure from the party, he strongly criticized the management of the mayor, Christian Estrosi, last Monday. “Niçois should not have to pay for the mayor of Nice’s poor management,” he stated from the port of Nice. The deputy for the Alpes Maritimes did not mince his words, claiming that “the mayor has picked the pockets of the Niçois to finance his lavish lifestyle and poor management.”

“The Less We Have, The More They Take From Us!”

In response, Éric Ciotti launched an online petition on mesopinions.com
to oppose this increase in property tax and force the mayor, Christian Estrosi, to reverse his decision next year. He also announced that he would be in the streets of Nice to “alert and mobilize” the Niçois.

Today, the petition has gathered 2,563 signatures from residents of Nice and surrounding areas, as well as over 650 comments where participants express their dissatisfaction openly.

Among the reactions, one can read: “The less we have, the more they take from us!”; “This increase is mind-boggling, the tax pressure is becoming unbearable” or, “Exorbitant increase, as a retiree, my pension is not keeping up. I’m even considering moving. Is it the mayor’s intention to get rid of people who are not wealthy?

For the petition to be “more likely to reach its intended recipient,” it should gather 5,000 signatures.
