Stephan Eicher will perform in Nice for SEUL EN SCรNE on Saturday, November 16th, at Thรฉรขtre Lino Ventura. What can the audience in Nice expect? Interview.
A Swiss author, composer, and performer, known in France for the success of the cult song Dรฉjeuner en paix, musician Stephan Eicher invites you to the Lino Ventura theater in Nice, for ” Seul en scรจne ” on Saturday, November 16th. During his show, he shares stories from the periods of his life from 1978 to 2024. Expect: emotion, humor, song, and instruments.
In 40 years of career, how has your relationship with your audience evolved?
Even today, I am always very stressed when going on stage. I close my eyes, then I open them. I see there’s still an audience. It’s very moving. These are people with whom I would like to spend an evening at a table and chat. I am spoiled by my audience.
For you, the guitar is…
The guitar is magic. Let me explain: it’s a piece of wood with a few metal strings, not much! There are six strings, tuned in such a strange way, and we manage to create a universe with it. But I also love the piano…
Why did you choose the theater to perform?
I am in the theater because I prefer the lighting effects, the entrances, and the exits… Plus, I stage myself and everything is in motion. It fascinates me! In the theater, I will meet an audience who really likes me, and who wonders why I now focus on this aesthetic. While if I play at the Olympia, for example, there’s an audience of my age who knows me, of course, but also a whole new one, curious to discover my music in this context.
What can we expect from your performance?
The first question we ask is โWhat is he going to do?โ (laughs). I have built a stage with lots of hidden things, things appear and disappear… like a magic box. It’s like a blank page that gets filled with stories – I will talk about myself with all humility – instruments, songs, equipment. In the end, it’s a big mess! I go through all my phases. For example, I return to electronics. I play with guitar, piano, and also work with robotic instruments.
Your show is titled “Seul en scรจne”. Yet throughout, you create a complicity with your audience. You don’t like being alone?
No. We meet in a theater room: me on stage, the audience in front… With this show, I fill my solitude: I play with the audience, and it becomes a character. When I am alone on stage, I am inevitably closer to my audience, and it’s more enjoyable for them. However, for me, it’s a bit sadder. Touring alone means traveling alone, eating alone, returning alone…
