For her second comeback match at the Open d’Angers, Fiona Ferro faced the German player Tamara Korpatsch. A match that ended quickly for the French player.
A first real test. That’s what was on offer for Fiona Ferro on the courts of the Open d’Angers this Thursday. Feeling reassured on Tuesday after her three-set victory against young Tina Smith, the player from Valbonne had the chance to take a breather for 24 hours before playing her round of 16 match. The match was against a well-known German player, Tamara Korpatsch (ranked 138th in the world). At thirty years old, the Hamburg native recently faced several players from the Maritime Alps, including Alizé Cornet. The two players had already faced each other twice before. Each time, Tamara Korpatsch emerged victorious.
Unfortunately, the series continued today at the Open d’Angers. In great form at the end of the year, the German player is seeking points to re-enter the world Top 100, a level she has maintained with consistency over the past four seasons.
So, it was a true test for Fiona Ferro, but it ended swiftly this time. More impactful and consistent in intensity, Tamara Korpatsch found strong opposition at the start of the match. Fiona Ferro did more than just defend but ultimately paid the price for her nervousness on her second serve. Broken three times in the second half of the second set, she couldn’t sufficiently unsettle her opponent. She lost the first set (6-2) without any real surprise.
As with her first match, Fiona Ferro returned to the court with the desire to perform well. She managed to surprise the German on her first service game but was in turn caught behind. Tamara Korpatsch pulled ahead and seemed unassailable on her serve. Despite a strong resistance from the Côte d’Azur native, she eventually found the key in the 8th game with a clean service game. Fiona Ferro tried to respond and pushed her opponent, saving five match points. Too late. Tamara Korpatsch won in straight sets (6-2/6-3) and will face the No. 1 seed, Alycia Parks, in the next round.
