Nice à Vélo challenges the candidates for a bicycle-friendly metropolis

Latest News

As the municipal elections of March 2026 approach, the association Nice à Vélo undertakes a citizen advocacy initiative by addressing the candidates for the mayoralty of the communes within the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis. A platform of 30 concrete proposals is submitted in order to make the metropolis a safer, calmer, and more accessible territory, facilitating everyday travel for everyone.

Titled “A Cyclable Metropolis by 2030, safe and accessible to everyone”, this booklet of proposals is the result of more than 100 hours of citizen mobilization. Volunteers and bicycle users gathered at a participatory workshop held in autumn 2025. The stated goal is to illuminate the public debate and allow voters to better understand the commitments of leading candidates regarding mobility, living environment, and public space sharing.

This initiative is set within a context marked by strong citizen expectations. The Cycling Barometer 2025 by FUB, which gathered more than 330,000 responses, shows that while the desire for cycling is increasing throughout France, the conditions for safety and route continuity remain insufficient. In the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis area, with 1,255 responses, the results confirm still limited progress. Safety, continuity of facilities, bicycle parking, and road violence remain central concerns.

Structured and Operational Proposals

The 30 proposals are organized around six major themes: safety, calming, and compliance with rules are in the foreground, with the generalization of 30 km/h zones, the creation of school streets, the deployment of contraflow cycling, and the adoption of a “Vision Zero” approach. A structured and secure cycling network is also highlighted, including the creation of a Metropolitan Express Bike Network, securing major axes and intersections, and ensuring route continuity.

The document concurrently addresses integrated mobility and cycling services, with the development of secure parking, bicycle-public transport intermodality, and long-term rental services. The learning and transmission of cycling culture occupy a dedicated place, through the deployment of the “Savoir Rouler à Vélo” for children, cycling lessons for adults, and training for municipal and metropolitan agents.
Trade, economy, health, and social justice segments, as well as governance and participation, complete the ensemble, with the creation of active mobility committees, public monitoring indicators, and enhanced consultation with users. Some proposals are accompanied by measurable and dated objectives to facilitate transparent tracking of commitments over the duration of the mandate.

The proposals have already been transmitted to the candidates for the mayoralty of Nice. The lead candidates of the communes of Cagnes-sur-Mer, Saint-Laurent-du-Var, La Trinité, Vence, and Carros will receive them in the coming days. All candidates of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis are invited to review the document and take a position on the proposals, regardless of the territory concerned.

The responses will be made public on the association’s website. This publication aims to allow the inhabitants of the metropolis to compare commitments and foster an informed democratic debate on the future of mobility.
A timeline accompanies the initiative, with a response deadline set for February 15 and an announcement of responses beginning on February 20.
