Roland Garros 2026: the task was too great for Fiona Ferro

Latest News

During Thursday’s main draw of Roland-Garros 2026, Fiona Ferro faces an extremely difficult first round, opposing young Russian Mirra Andreeva this Sunday.

An almost impossible feat for Fiona Ferro in the first round of Roland-Garros 2026

Even before the match, victory seemed like an upset for the French player. Indeed, Mirra Andreeva, quarterfinalist last year and semifinalist in 2024, 8th player in the world, was heavily favored against the Valbonnaise player, 200th in the WTA rankings and a tournament wild card. Despite good resistance from Fiona Ferro, the young Russian dominated for just over an hour and won in 2 sets.

In the first set, the French player loses her serve in her very first service game, quickly trailing 3/0. Fiona Ferro did create 5 break point opportunities late in the set, but failed to convert them. Unrelenting, particularly on serve, Mirra Andreeva takes the first set 6/3.

In the second set the scenario is similar. Unfortunately, service quality is not there for Fiona Ferro, notably with no points won on her second serve. More aggressive (nine winners) and more impactful at the net (100% of net points won), Mirra Andreeva confirms her ranking and wins “logically” in two sets, (6/3-6/3).

In the next round, the young Russian will face the winner of the match between Bassols Ribera and Arango.

On the French side, on this first round Sunday, Clara Burel, Titouan Droguet, Benjamin Bonzi, Luka Pavlovic, Kyrian Jacquet and Arthur Géa have unfortunately already been eliminated from the Paris Grand Slam. For now, only Quentin Halys has qualified for the second round.
