After her encouraging run at Roland Garros, France’s new number 1 Diane Parry continues to maintain her convincing level of play this week at the Berlin WTA500.
Diane Parry, in control, reached the main draw in Berlin
Despite her fine results in May and at Roland Garros and her jump in the WTA rankings, the Nice native had to go through qualifying at the Berlin WTA500 this weekend.
Diane first faced local player Ella Seidel. Slightly more confident than her opponent of the day on her serve and on important points, the Frenchwoman achieved a break in each set and won in two sets 6/3-6/4.
In the second (and final) round of qualifying, Diane Parry faced Anna Kalinina, whom she had defeated three weeks ago in the first round of the French Open. In just under two hours and with only 2 more points won than her opponent, the Frenchwoman won in two sets and thus reached the final draw. Final score: 6/4-7/5.
Courageous, Diane Parry is stopped in the quarterfinals
Diane Parry thus began the Berlin WTA500 on Monday. Facing the Danish player Clara Tauson (23rd in the world) in the first round, the Nice native, ranked lower, had her work cut out to continue her run.
Yet Diane Parry, in line with her two qualifying matches, imposed her style. Comfortable on serve (73% of points won on her serve), the Frenchwoman converted two break points, one in each set, to win 6/3-6/4 in 1h30.
In the quarterfinals, the level of opposition increased another notch for Diane Parry. The Frenchwoman faced the 13th-ranked player in the world Linda Noskova on Thursday.
After a difficult start to the match, the Frenchwoman quickly found herself down 4-0. At a disadvantage in power compared to her opponent, Diane Parry also struggled to control her service games unlike her previous matches. She ultimately lost the first set 6-2. In the second set, the Nice native was not able to compete with the young 21-year-old Czech. Well positioned on court and consistent from start to finish of the match, Linda Noskova won in 2 sets in just over 1 hour: 6/2-6/2.
Diane Parry should be back on court next week, at the Bad Homburg WTA500 or the Eastbourne WTA250, as her final warm-up tournament before Wimbledon, where she lost in the 3rd round last season.
