The Alpes-Maritimes Prefecture announces orange heatwave alert and very high fire risk in several massifs this Saturday. The authorities call for caution, with access restrictions to forests and essential measures to prevent heat stroke and fire outbreaks.

The Prefecture places the Alpes-Maritimes department on orange heatwave alert this Saturday, July 18. Largely spared so far, the announced temperatures will be high throughout the day, with up to 39°C in the West, 37°C between Nice and Menton and 36°C in the valleys. The night will remain warm on the coast, with lows around 23°C. These conditions can cause heat stroke, particularly in elderly people, people with chronic diseases, children, isolated people and outdoor workers. The authorities remind that symptoms to watch for are high fever, hot and dry skin, headaches, nausea, drowsiness or confusion.

Restrictions in massifs and call for caution

The Estérel/Tanneron massifs are classified as very severe risk and will be closed for the day. Access, circulation and work are prohibited. The Western coast and Upper-Estéron areas are at severe risk, with access discouraged and a ban on pyrogen work from 1 PM onwards. The rest of the department remains at moderate risk. The authorities remind that nine out of ten fires are of human origin and insist on the need to respect access bans, not to light fires near massifs and not to throw cigarette butts from a vehicle. In case of fire outbreak, alert must be given immediately by calling 18 or 112.

Health services recommend drinking regularly, cooling off several times a day and limiting physical activities. Shutters should remain closed during the day, with ventilation at night. Those close to vulnerable people are invited to check on them and accompany them to cool or air-conditioned places. In case of discomfort, it is advisable to contact a doctor. Residents can contact their town hall for any questions related to the heatwave or access restrictions to massifs.
