Laurent Abergel is suffering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The OGC Nice midfielder underwent medical examinations after being injured Saturday evening in a friendly match against Cagliari.
Fears were present from the first minutes of the match between Cagliari and OGC Nice. Laurent Abergel left the field after just 17 minutes of play. Examinations conducted over the weekend and then on Monday confirmed the severity of the injury.
The midfielder is suffering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. An injury that comes two weeks before Ligue 1 resumes and which disrupts the Gym’s preparation.
An absence that could last several months
Laurent Abergel had established himself in Olivier Pantaloni’s starting eleven since the beginning of preparation. Against Cagliari, OGC Nice’s first summer signing was again starting in a 4-3-3 system.
The injury occurred due to a bad footplant. The 33-year-old midfielder attempted to continue the match before giving up his place a few minutes later. Examinations then confirmed the anterior cruciate ligament tear.
Surgery should be considered. The unavailability could then reach approximately six months. The exact timeline will however depend on medical care and recovery progress.
OGC Nice responded to this announcement in a statement: “OGC Nice will do everything in its power to support the player in the coming months, so that he can recover and come back even stronger.”
This injury is a blow to Olivier Pantaloni, who was counting on Laurent Abergel’s experience in midfield. The former FC Lorient player had signed with Nice for three seasons during the offseason.
Arriving as a free agent after seven years with the Merlus, Laurent Abergel was supposed to bring his experience and strengthen a position targeted by the Gym. The French midfielder was also reuniting with Olivier Pantaloni, who was already on the bench at Lorient last season.
OGC Nice’s preparation now continues without one of its first signings. The Nice staff will have to manage without this player as Ligue 1’s return approaches.
