Free buses and trams in Nice could soon be extended to new users. After residents aged 65 and over, the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis is considering extending it to younger retirees and certain healthcare workers. But behind the announcement, several differences in timeline and conditions deserve clarification.
Retired at 60, employed at 67: who will be eligible for what?
Since September 1, 2026, residents aged 65 and over living in the Metropolis can benefit from a free subscription to the Lignes d’Azur network, with no income restrictions. According to the press release issued this Friday, October 30, by the metropolitan presidency, 48,000 residents already benefit from it.
The new proposal consists of opening the scheme to all retirees residing in the Metropolis, regardless of their age. A person who retired before age 65 could thus become eligible. Conversely, the press release provides for a transitional arrangement for people aged at least 65 who already have a free subscription but are not yet retired: they could keep it for one year.
Caution: this extension has not yet been voted on. The metropolitan council must vote on Friday, November 6. The terms and application date will need to be confirmed after the deliberation.
Healthcare workers: a date for the CHU, ongoing discussions for the private sector
For staff at Nice’s CHU, free travel, voted in June, is to become effective on November 7, 2026, the press release states. Its implementation had required exchanges between the Metropolis and the hospital management.
The Metropolis now wishes to extend the measure to healthcare personnel residing on its territory and working in public or private hospital facilities that operate permanently, seven days a week and twenty-four hours a day. The vote is also scheduled for November 6.
The phrase “all healthcare workers” used in the announcement does not necessarily mean “all health professionals”. The conditions mentioned relate to residence and the type of facility. The situation of self-employed professionals, private practices, and staff living outside the Metropolis is not addressed by this text. For newly affected facilities, practical arrangements will only be discussed after the vote.
A broader union demand
The issue of place of residence is already raising questions. In a press release published on October 15, the CGT at Nice’s CHU called for free travel to apply to all hospital staff, including those living outside the Metropolis. The union also mentioned discussions about financing the scheme. The proposal presented today therefore does not address all the demands expressed by staff representatives.
Free, but not without formalities
Another essential point: having the right to free travel is not enough to board the tram without a ticket. Lignes d’Azur reminds users that a free subscription must be established and validated for each trip. For the scheme for those over 65, card creation fees of 15 euros are planned. The exact procedures for the new categories will need to be clarified.
Users can find information and procedures on the official Lignes d’Azur website. Nice Premium also detailed the registration procedures when the scheme was launched in September.
How much will the extension cost?
This is one of the questions the October 30 press release leaves open: it provides neither the number of potential new beneficiaries nor the estimated cost of the proposed extensions. In July, the annual cost of free travel for those over 65 was estimated at nearly 6 million euros if all eligible people took advantage of it, according to figures presented at the time by the Metropolis and reported by Nice-Matin. This amount concerns the previous scheme and should not be presented as the cost of the new measures.
The metropolitan council meeting on November 6 should therefore clarify not only the eligible categories, but also the financial implications and implementation procedures.
What to remember before November 6
- Age 65 and over, residing in the Metropolis: free travel already in effect since September 1, provided you have the required subscription.
- Retirees under 65: extension proposed, subject to the November 6 vote.
- Nice CHU staff: implementation announced for November 7.
- Healthcare workers at public and private facilities: extension proposed subject to residence and facility conditions; procedures still to be defined.
