The executive commission of the International Olympic Committee, meeting yesterday, Friday, June 9, in Lausanne, unanimously adopted a recommendation in favor of a dual vote in September for the awarding of the 2024 and 2028 Olympics, stated its president, Thomas Bach.
The International Olympic Committee thus wishes to guarantee Paris and Los Angeles hosting the Games, either in 2024 or in 2028.
This recommendation will now be submitted to the hundred or so IOC members convened for an “extraordinary session on July 11 and 12 in Lausanne.”
If the dual vote is formally accepted by the members, it remains to be seen in what order the 2024 and 2028 Olympics will be awarded during the 130th IOC session on September 13 in Lima, as both cities continue to assert they are only campaigning for 2024, even though Los Angeles seemed to open the door to 2028 this week in a letter from its president.
“We have spoken with both cities but have not negotiated,” added Mr. Bach. “It is now up to the IOC members to express their views.”
The discussions that have taken place so far with the two candidate cities “have been very open, no one has closed the door, but out of respect for the IOC members we do not want to go further at the moment,” declared the head of the Olympic family.
