The Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis has provided a pillar that counts bicycles daily, to then make a cumulative total for the year in real-time. This tool aims to communicate, educate, and encourage the use of bicycles in the area.
Promoting the use of bike lanes as a daily mode of transportation is part of the proactive policy of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis. This is clear, considering that since 2008, these lanes have increased their network by approximately 115%. At the end of August, the city will become the world capital of cycling. From August 27 to August 31, the people of Nice will experience the Grand Départ of the 2020 Tour de France, giving Nice the opportunity to encourage people to adopt cycling as a new means of transportation. To this end, a “totem” has been installed on the Promenade des Anglais, at the level of Carras. Since June, it has allowed real-time display of data regarding bike lane usage on public space. Thirteen other counters are already present in the metropolis, but they do not display data. They are only used to analyze usage and improve the facilities based on these observations.
But this program will not stop there. Two more “totems” are already planned to make this information available to citizens. The first will be placed in Cagnes-sur-Mer near the seaside bike lane (at the level of Boulevard Kennedy). The second will be installed between Rue du Congrès and Plage du Centenaire, on the Promenade des Anglais.
