The Covid-19 pandemic was responsible for the deaths of 13 million to 17 million people by the end of 2021, which is much higher than the officially recorded death toll, according to a new estimate by the World Health Organization (WHO) published Thursday, May 5.

These highly anticipated figures provide a more realistic idea of the devastating effects (including indirect ones) of the worst pandemic in a century, which continues to cause thousands of deaths each week.

The new estimate by the World Health Organization confirms a much higher toll than that given by the official figures from the authorities of each country.
