This Saturday, May 7, the Azur coach will compete in a French Cup final with OGC Nice. A historic moment for the Nice club, but not unheard of for the Gym’s coach.
The time is almost here! At 9 PM, the kickoff for the 105th French Cup final, which will be contested between OGC Nice and FC Nantes, will take place.
None of the players from both teams have won this competition, but this is not the case for the two coaches, Christophe Galtier and Antoine Kombouaré.
Indeed, in his playing career (1985-1999) and since his beginnings on the sidelines, Christophe Galtier has participated in and won the French Cup several times.
Wearing the colors of Olympique de Marseille, Galtier consecutively played two finals (1986 and 1987) against the Girondins de Bordeaux. OM lost both matches, but Galtier would later find success in the competition, albeit not as a professional player.
It was in 2007 and then in 2008 as assistant coach to Alain Perrin that Christophe Galtier managed to win it. First with Sochaux, defeating… Olympique de Marseille, and then the following year with Lyon against Paris Saint-Germain.
In his career as a head coach, which he began in 2009 with Saint-Etienne, Galtier has once again reached the final with OGC Nice. It remains to be seen whether this 5th French Cup final of his career will be a third success or a third defeat.
On the side of Antoine Kombouaré, the coach of the Canaries has won the national competition three times. Unlike Galtier, his victories come first as a player with PSG in 1993 and then in 1995, and again as a coach with Paris in 2010. The Kanak also faced a final defeat with the capital club in 2011.
