Six months after its presentation at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was highly appreciated, Nicolas Bedos’s “La Belle Époque” is finally hitting this week’s movie releases.
Two years after “Monsieur et Madame Adelman,” the director reunites with Doria Tillier for a romantic comedy with a nostalgic twist, featuring Daniel Auteuil, Fanny Ardant, and Guillaume Canet.
Victor, played by Daniel Auteuil, and Marianne, portrayed by Fanny Ardant, are no longer on the same wavelength after years of marriage. Tired, she throws him out. To clear his mind, Victor accepts a gift from his son: a voucher to be transported back in time, in a studio with actors, to an era of his choice. He chooses that day in May 1974 when he met Marianne.
For nearly two hours, director Nicolas Bedos plays between the present and the reconstructed past in “La Belle Époque.” The gamble is risky but very successful, thanks in particular to the magnificent presence of Doria Tillier.
