The president of the Alpes-Maritimes Department, Charles Ange Ginésy, is calling on local stakeholders to symbolically turn off their lights on the occasion of Earth Day, the night of April 22 to April 23, 2024.
As part of the International Earth Day on Monday, April 22, 2024, the Alpes-Maritimes Department and the International Dark Sky Reserve continue their commitment to the preservation of the night sky. For several years, the Department has been undertaking actions to reduce light pollution and promote access to the starry sky.
Charles Ange Ginésy, President of the Department, has sent an invitation to the Mayors, Presidents of inter-municipalities, businesses, and merchants of the Alpes-Maritimes to symbolically turn off the lighting on the night of April 22 to 23, 2024 for Earth Day. According to the Department President, the goal of this action is to “protect biodiversity and save energy.” Indeed, this initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting the nighttime environment and reducing energy consumption.
A special photo contest on the starry sky!
In parallel, a special photo contest on the starry sky has been launched. Participants are invited to capture the beauty of the night sky in the department during the night of April 22 to 23, 2024 or at least during the week of April 22, 2024.
