For the past week, Christian Estrosi has been a victim in a legal matter following the discovery of a pig’s head and an antisemitic poster hung on the gate of his home in Nice. Two men have since been arrested and charged in the investigation opened for threats, contempt of an elected official and incitement to religious hatred.

On February 27, Christian Estrosi made a macabre discovery in front of his Nice home. A pig’s head cut in two had been hung on the gate of his residence. A poster depicting the elected official’s face was attached to the animal. The portrait featured a Star of David drawn on the forehead and an insulting message. The inscription “Bastard!” appeared on the poster.

Christian Estrosi and his wife Laura Tenoudji discovered it upon returning to their home. The elected official, candidate for re-election in the municipal elections scheduled for March 15 and 22, described the acts as “abject”.

The Nice prosecutor’s office opened an investigation for “threats and contempt toward a person holding public authority” as well as for “incitement to hatred and violence on grounds of religion.”

Christian Estrosi also announced he would file a complaint. On social media X, the mayor of Nice decided to publish a photograph showing the pig’s head and the poster. In a message accompanying the image, Christian Estrosi wrote: “Everything I have always fought against in my city is knocking at my door today.”

An investigation and two suspects arrested

The investigation was entrusted to investigators to identify those responsible for the act. Initially, the Nice prosecutor’s office stated that “no arrests have been made so far, but investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest the perpetrator.”

It was only a few days later that the investigation progressed. Two men were arrested on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The arrests took place in Nice for one suspect and in Seine-et-Marne for the second.

The two men, of Tunisian nationality, were born in 1988 and 1990 respectively. The suspects were placed in custody before being presented to an investigating judge.

The Nice prosecutor’s office announced yesterday, Friday, March 6, the charging of the two men. Judicial proceedings have been opened for several offenses.

The charges retained in the file were “violence against a public official without incapacity aggravated by a circumstance in this case due to origin, ethnicity, nationality, race or religion”, “public incitement to hatred or violence on grounds of origin, ethnicity, nationality, race or religion”, “fraudulent access to an automated personal data processing system” and “criminal association with a view to committing offenses.”

The two suspects gave different versions during questioning. The man born in 1988 denied any participation in the acts. The second suspect, born in 1990, admitted to “participation in certain preparatory acts while contesting his direct and voluntary involvement.”

The prosecutor also clarified several elements regarding the background of the two men. The suspect born in 1988 has already been convicted of “undeclared work”, “driving without a license” and “theft as part of a group.” The individual presented himself as “holder of a doctorate in computer science and self-employed.” The file also mentioned possession of an asylum application receipt.

The second suspect has previously been convicted of “violations of narcotics legislation.” The information provided by the courts indicated an irregular status on French territory. The individual stated he worked undeclared on construction sites.

Christian Estrosi mentions an attempted infiltration

Following the arrests, Christian Estrosi released a statement in which several new elements were mentioned. The mayor of Nice indicated that one of the suspects allegedly attempted to approach his team.

Christian Estrosi stated he was “victim of an unprecedented intelligence operation while praising the work of the prosecutor and investigators, who made it possible to arrest two individuals suspected of a deliberate act of extreme gravity at my home and whose backgrounds, as revealed by the Prosecutor, are particularly frightening.”

The elected official also claimed to have witnessed one of the arrests: “this arrest took place before my eyes. The acts could have posed a threat to my physical integrity. One of those involved attempted to infiltrate my entourage and to intervene within my campaign team.”

A collaborator of the Nice mayor was heard as a witness by investigators. Christian Estrosi specified that “the investigation continues and I will not give up. My lawyer will file a civil claim.”

In the same statement, the mayor of Nice indicated that the suspect mentioned would only have maintained limited contact with his entourage.

Political reactions and campaign climate

The matter occurred in a context of electoral campaign. Christian Estrosi is running for re-election for a fourth term as mayor of Nice, with the first round to take place in a week.

Several political leaders responded to the discovery of the pig’s head and the antisemitic poster. Eric Ciotti, opponent of Christian Estrosi in the municipal election, quickly released a statement. The president of the Union of the Right for the Republic assured “the mayor of Nice and his family” of his “full and complete support in this ordeal.” The deputy, also a candidate for mayor, also denounced “a serious attack on human dignity and a direct attack against the fundamental values of the Republic.”

Julien Picot, running mate on the United for Nice list also declared: “we condemn in the strongest terms the ignoble act committed in front of the home of the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi. Placing a pig’s head in front of an elected official’s house is not only attacking a person or their family, but attacking all of our republican values, human dignity and living together. This barbaric act does not come out of nowhere. It is part of a nauseating political climate where the far right normalizes hatred, violence and the designation of scapegoats. Nice must not become the playground of hatred.”

For her part, Mireille Damiano from the Nice Popular Front list also condemned this “ignoble and antisemitic act. This attack, marked by explicitly antisemitic symbols, targets the entire Jewish community and, beyond that, the Republic itself. Full and complete solidarity with the Jewish community.”

In his statement, Christian Estrosi mentioned an escalation of attacks targeting him: “after the insults, after the assaults, after the ignoble staged events, obscure maneuvers continue. It is an unworthy escalation.”

The incumbent mayor also stated his desire to continue the municipal campaign: “nothing will divert me from the people of Nice. They can erect all obstacles, spread all falsehoods, multiply the most ignoble attacks: nothing will shake my determination.”

The official took the opportunity to mention several hypotheses about the origins of the matter: “some have sunk very low in trying to attack me personally. This situation troubles me and rightfully I am asking myself questions. Is it an organized mafia? Foreign interference from another country? Opponents capable of the worst?”

The judicial investigation continues to establish the precise role of the suspects and the circumstances under which the acts were committed.
