The Prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes has announced the closure of public establishments. This is due to the arrival of Hurricane Kirk, which is expected to hit the department on the night of Monday, October 7 to Tuesday, October 8.
The Alpes-Maritimes department has been placed under alert for rain and flooding from 3 AM to 2 PM. It is also under an orange alert for storms and floods, according to Météo France forecasts. In response to this situation, the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, announced the activation of the municipal vigilance unit from 2:30 AM this Tuesday as well as the metropolitan coordination post.
Two areas will be particularly monitored: between the Esterel massif and the coast, as well as the medium inland area. Up to 100 mm of rain is expected.
To ensure the safety of the population, all parks, gardens, cemeteries, beaches, and public establishments (daycares, schools, libraries, museums…) will be closed. School transport will be suspended. Accommodation measures for the homeless will be taken, with the opening of the Leyrit gym at 9:30 PM.
The city recommends remote work for employees who are not directly involved in crisis management. After the weather event, parks and other infrastructures will remain closed for safety inspections.
An emergency number has been established: 0497135600. The public is advised to follow safety instructions: limit travel, take shelter, and protect property vulnerable to severe weather.
