As part of the Year of Russia, the Directorate of Historical Heritage, Niรงoise Language and Culture, led by Jean Marc Giaume, city councilor, is organizing a series of lectures to provide a comprehensive view of the Russian presence in Nice through the monuments, artists, and politicians who have contributed to shaping our region.
A happy and extraordinary era, this is what the years 1860-1914 were like on the French Riviera. Every winter, the imperial family and high aristocracy from all over Europe would mingle. Very quickly, the need for an Orthodox place of worship was felt within the Russian community. In 1860, it was the church on Rue de Longchamp, the first Russian church in Western Europe, followed by the inauguration in 1912 of the Saint Nicholas Cathedral with its incredible onion-dome silhouette standing out against the sky of the Cรดte dโAzur.
Alexis Obolensky will present the most recent knowledge on these remarkable churches from both a historical and architectural perspective.
Alexis Obolensky is a university associate professor. He taught Russian literature and history for over thirty years at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis. Since 2004, he has been the churchwarden of the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Parish in Nice.
