What are the legislative elections?
This vote, more commonly known as the “third round,” will allow you to elect the 577 deputies who will sit in the National Assembly. Elected deputies vote on laws and oversee the Government’s actions. Their elections are therefore just as important as the presidential elections.
The legislative elections will be held on June 12 and 19, 2022.
To be able to vote, you must be registered on the electoral lists.
This registration can be completed online until May 4 and in the town hall until May 6.
The request to register on the electoral lists can be submitted via:
- Internet at https://www.elections.interieur.gouv.fr/
- Personally by going to the town hall with the required documents
- By mail, attaching the specific form
If you choose to register at the town hall or by mail, it is advisable to plan ahead, as this takes some time.
New 18-year-old voters who have completed their citizenship census are automatically registered on the electoral lists. This is also the case for people who became French after 2018. However, if you have moved, you must re-register at the town hall of your new residence or declare your new address if you moved within the same town.
People already registered on the electoral lists for the presidential election and who have not moved since are still registered and will vote at the same polling station as in recent weeks. However, people who have just moved to a new commune or those who were not registered for the presidential elections will need to register on the electoral lists to participate in the vote.
If in doubt, it is possible to check your status online by visiting the government website.
You simply need to provide your voting commune, your first and last names, gender, and date of birth. This service will inform you of your status, your national voter number, as well as the address of your polling station.
If you are unable to attend the polling station in person, it is always possible to arrange for a proxy vote through someone you trust. It is advised to carry out this process as early as possible, but you have until the day before the vote to complete it.
To appoint a trusted person to vote at your polling station, you need to fill out an online form and then go to the police station to complete an identity verification. Once this is done, you will receive an email notification that the proxy is effective.
